Los Angeles, CA (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Andre Ethier went 3-for-4 with two doubles
and a three-run homer, and the Dodgers got by the Pirates, 5-1.
Reed Johnson and James Loney each had two hits and an RBI for Los Angeles,
which won the opener of the three-game set on Friday to snap a five-game
slide.
Ramon Ortiz (1-1) got credit for the win with three scoreless innings of
relief behind Carlos Monasterios, who gave up one run on three hits and two
walks over four innings in his first big league start.
Zach Duke (2-3) gave up four runs on nine hits and two walks in six innings
for the Pirates, who had won three in a row prior to the start of this set.
Andrew McCutchen provided the only offense for Pittsburgh with a home run in
the first inning. The bases were empty due to Akinori Iwamura getting thrown
out trying to steal second.
Andy LaRoche grounded into a fielder's choice to leave the bases loaded in the
away second, and LA took the lead for good an inning later.
Ethier provided the difference, taking Duke's 0-2 slider over the wall in
right center. Monasterios and Russell Martin, who both reached on singles,
also scored on the blast.
Johnson doubled in Blake DeWitt for a 4-1 lead in the fourth, and Ortiz took
over from there, allowing just two hits and fanning five in the next three
frames.
Jack Taschner relieved Duke in the seventh and gave up a leadoff double to
Ethier, who came around two batters later on Loney's two-bagger.
Hong Chih Kuo hurled a 1-2-3 eighth, and Ramon Troncoso pitched a scoreless
ninth.
Game Notes
Monasterios had made seven relief appearances this season, pitching to a 1.69
earned-run average in 10 2/3 innings...Duke, who has lost his last three
starts, beat the Dodgers on Opening Day...Ryan Church had two of Pittsburgh's
six hits...This was Ortiz's first win since October 1, 2007 when he was
pitching for Minnesota.
