Flyers go for fifth straight win in afternoon clash with Oilers

Hockey Betting Lines

11/02/2008 - (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - The suddenly-hot Philadelphia Flyers shoot for a fifth straight win this afternoon, as they welcome the Edmonton Oilers to the Wachovia Center.

The Flyers began the season with six straight losses (0-3-3), but have responded with four wins in a row and points in each of their last six games (4-0-2).

Interestingly, Philadelphia's winning streak began after Daniel Briere suffered an abdominal injury that will cost him another three weeks of action. Briere has missed the club's last four games.

Jeff Carter has picked up the scoring slack, as he had two goals in Thursday's 3-2 overtime win against the New York Islanders. Carter's second tally was the game-winner, as he wristed home a shot from the left side with 22.9 seconds left in the extra frame.

Carter, who notched a career-high 29 goals last season, is tied for third in the NHL with eight markers this season.

Mike Knuble scored in his fourth straight game, while Martin Biron made 34 saves for the Flyers, who are 2-2-1 at home this season. Simon Gagne added two assists in the victory.

Philadelphia is on its first four-game winning streak since March 18-25 of last season and will try tonight to rattle off five wins in a row for the first time since October 10-20, 2007.

The Oilers were in action yesterday afternoon and notched a 3-1 win over Carolina to halt a five-game losing streak (0-4-1). Ethan Moreau netted the game-winning goal with 1:28 left in the third period and then added an empty- net tally to cap the victory.

Shawn Horcoff chipped in with a goal and an assist for the Oilers, who had been outscored 17-5 on their slide. Dwayne Roloson was solid between the pipes for Edmonton, stopping 33-of-34 shots.

Edmonton has now split the first two games of its seven-game road trip, a swing that next takes the club to Columbus on Wednesday. The Oilers improved to 3-4-0 on the road with yesterday's win.

Edmonton is unbeaten in its last five against the Flyers (4-0 with a tie), having not lost to the club since March 19, 2001. The Oilers have also won their last three trips to the City of Brotherly Love.

March Madness odds and printable March Madness brackets

With the field of 64/65 set, MySportsbook.com has the Florida Gators as the 4-1 favorite to successfully defend their National Championship.  Men’s Division-1 College Basketball has not seen a team repeat as National Champions since Duke won back to back championships in ’91 & ‘92.  After losing three out of four late in the season, the Gators are full of momentum as they won their last four games by an average of 18 points.  Not surprisingly, right behind the Gators are the other three top seeds: Kansas 5-1, UNC 6-1, and Ohio State 7-1.  Many consider Kansas to be the hottest team in the country, having won 11 straight. With Kansas, it is hard to ignore all of the early exits from the “dance” in recent years.  With an impressive ACC Tournament, UNC ensured themselves the other top seed.  UNC has about as much talent as any other team in the tournament but with a team that’s best players are primarily freshman and sophomores, could youth be a concern.  Behind freshman sensation, Greg Oden, OSU will look to do what their football team failed to do just a few months earlier.  OSU seems to have peeked at the right time, as they currently have a 17 game winning streak.  Since the tournament field was expanded in 1985, there has never been an instance where all four #1 seeds advanced to the Final Four.  It is obvious that each of the top seeds have the talent to make it through to Atlanta.  But as everyone knows, when makes the NCAA Tournament so special are all of the spoilers and “Cinderella” stories that knock off the favorites on a daily basis.
