Basketball Betting Lines

07/08/2010 - Lexington, KY (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Former University of Kentucky product and NBA center Mel Turpin was found dead of an apparent suicide at the age of 49.

The Herald-Leader reported on Thursday that police responded to a personal injury report at Turpin's home in Lexington to find Turpin alone in the residence. His wife had apparently not been home for several weeks due to treatment of a medical issue.

The paper stated that Fayette County coroner Gary Ginn later confirmed the death as a suicide.

A native of Lexington, Turpin played at Kentucky from 1980-84. He was selected sixth overall by the Washington Bullets in the 1984 draft, but began his career with the Cavaliers following a draft-day trade.

Over five NBA seasons with Cleveland, Utah and Washington, Turpin was a disappointment, averaging only 8.5 points, 4.6 rebounds and 1.0 blocks per game over 361 contests.
