Lakers finish off Thunder on Gasol's last-second shot

Basketball Betting Lines

05/01/2010 - Oklahoma City, OK (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Pau Gasol scored on a put-back off a Kobe Bryant miss with half a second remaining, pushing the Los Angeles Lakers into the second round of the playoffs with a 95-94 win over the Oklahoma City Thunder.

The Lakers blew a seven-point lead with 4 1/2 minutes left, but then came back from a three-point deficit to take Game 6 of their Western Conference quarterfinal series.

The Thunder won twice on their home court and nearly a third time against the defending NBA champions, but Gasol, with his dominant inside play, pushed the Lakers into round two against Utah. The Jazz finished off Denver in six games Friday night and will play in Los Angeles for Game 1 of the Western Conference semifinals Sunday afternoon.

Bryant let a shot go from the right baseline over Russell Westbrook, but it missed off the rim. Gasol got inside position on Serge Ibaka and scored on the put-back.

Bryant scored 32 points, while Gasol scored nine to go with 18 rebounds, the last one being the most crucial of the series.

Kevin Durant had 26 points but was just 5-of-23 from the field, and Westbrook finished with 21 points and nine assists for the Thunder, who were honored with a standing ovation at the Ford Center after the game.

Durant's layup extended the Thunder to a 94-91 edge with 2 1/2 minutes left, but Bryant responded with a jumper from the left corner 19 seconds later.

Neither team could find the hoop over the next two minutes. Westbrook missed a jumper and Nick Collison's ensuing layup try was blocked by Lamar Odom. Bryant, though missed at the other end, and teammate Ron Artest was off the mark on a straight-on three-point try with 1:26 left.

Westbrook's three-pointer didn't fall with nearly a minute left, but Gasol's hook shot in the lane also missed.

Oklahoma City's last possession with substantial time ended with Westbrook missing a jumper from the right side, which led to the thrilling finish.

The Lakers beat the Jazz in three of the four meetings during this regular season. It will be the third straight year the teams will meet in the playoffs. The Lakers beat Utah in five games in the first round last year and in 2008 LA prevailed in six games in the conference semifinals.

Super Bowl XLIV Odds

Super Bowl XLIII isn't even a week old yet and oddsmakers have already released Super Bowl XLIV odds.

Despite the Pittsburgh Steelers winning Super Bowl 43, the New England Patriots are 8/1 favorites to win Super Bowl 44.

Bet Super Bowl XLIV Future Odds

With their 27-23 victory over the Arizona Cardinals in Super Bowl XLIII, the Steelers became the latest NFL champion. But believe it or not, oddsmakers from online sports book MySportsbook.com don't have the Steelers the favorites to win Super Bowl XLIV next season.

That honor belongs to the New England Patriots, who are 8/1 favorites to win despite not even qualify for the postseason in 2008. The Pats also have a major decision to make regarding what to do with Matt Cassel, who played well in Tom Brady's (knee surgery) absence last year but is also a free agent this offseason.

Ironically, the Steelers aren't even oddsmakers second choice to win Super Bowl 44, as the Dallas Cowboys are listed right behind the Patriots at 9/1 despite not making the playoffs themselves. Clearly oddsmakers think the public will hop back on the Cowboys' bandwagon considering the immense talent they have and the opening of a brand new stadium.

After Dallas, then comes Pittsburgh at 10/1, but they share those odds with the New York Giants, who won Super Bowl XLII. The Indianapolis Colts and San Diego Chargers round out the top six teams at 12/1, while the Baltimore Ravens (14/1), Tennessee Titans (16/1), Carolina Panthers (18/1) and Philadelphia Eagles (18/1) complete the top 10.

The NFC Champion Arizona Cardinals got no love from oddsmakers as they were established as a 30/1 long shot to win next year's Super Bowl. They share those same odds with the Chicago Bears and Tampa Bay Buccaneers – two teams that didn't even qualify for the postseason. Other long shots are the Kansas City Chiefs (100/1), Detroit Lions (100/1), St. Louis Rams (75/1) and Oakland Raiders (75/1).
